We continue to offer support to South Lanarkshire's most at risk communities from the impacts of the coronavirus outbreak.

One of the many groups we are assisting during the COVID 19 lockdown is our Gypsy/Traveller community in East Kilbride and Larkhall.

Our two dedicated Site officers are maintaining regular contact with both sites and are working closely with other council departments and external partners to provide essential services and assist the community to stay safe and to access the help and support they need.

The Scottish Government is making additional funding available to provide emergency help for those worse affected by coronavirus.

Officers from Housing, Education and the NHS recently got together to provide the children living on these sites with packs containing both fun and educational activities.

Jean Williamson, who lives on the Larkhall site along with her family, said: “On behalf of our Tenants Association I would like to thank the council and NHS Keep Well for the help and support given to our tenants and their families throughout COVID 19. By working together we can overcome the problems that face us every day.”

And East Kilbride resident Mrs Price, who recently celebrated her 90th birthday at the site, added: “The site officers have been in constant contact with me to make sure I am okay and to ensure I am getting the services I need!

“I am delighted with and grateful for the help they are providing.”

The council and its partners are working hard to support all communities across South Lanarkshire during this challenging time.

Councillor Josh Wilson, the chair of the council’s Housing and Technical Resources, said: “I am pleased to see officers working closely with our local Gypsy/Traveller community to ensure that we not only provide that support, but also go that extra mile to help everyone get through this.”

A range of information for Gypsy/Travellers in relation to COVID 19 is available from the Scottish Government’s web pages.
