The themed lunch allowed the 10 primary schools to submit their own school meal choice for that day, with each dish having a Rutherglen slant to it.

The Facilities Go Fresh Club then selected a winning dish from the submissions for each meal category.

As a result, every primary school in Rutherglen had a meal choice on the day that reflected their pupils’ ideas and contributions, those meal choices included items such as Townhall Tiffin and Ruggie Duggie sausage in a finger roll which were extremely popular with everyone involved.

Chair of the council’s Community and Enterprise Resources Committee, Councillor Robert Brown, who is also chair of Rutherglen 900, visited pupils from Calderwood Primary School as they enjoyed their lunch.

They were joined by two special guests: Colin the Carrot, one of the Facilities mascots and part of the council’s Go Fresh Club, and Dougie the Pigeon, the official mascot of Rutherglen 900.

Councillor Brown said: “This was a great way to get the pupils involved in the celebrations for Rutherglen 900 and to get them thinking about their local area.

“It’s been wonderful to see how Rutherglen 900 has been fully embraced by the whole community and this was a fun and novel way to add to the celebrations.

“My thanks to the Facilities Team for leading this initiative.”

Rutherglen 900 is a community led initiative created to celebrate Rutherglen’s 900th anniversary. 

It is built on collaboration between local people, organisations, schools, community groups and volunteers to celebrate the people and place of Rutherglen. 

Throughout its 900th year Rutherglen is celebrating its history with various events for the community to celebrate and become involved in.
