Join litter pickers in your area to help keep your area clean

During the annual Spring Clean month of action everyone is being encouraged to do their bit to keep their streets and green spaces clean.
In doing so you will be joining the council in backing Keep Scotland Beautiful's #SpringCleanScotland, which runs until 24 April this year.
Across South Lanarkshire there are many litter picking groups who assist the council including East Kilbride Community Litter Pickers (EKCLP) who have been helping clear away all the waste so thoughtlessly thrown away by a few people who think the law doesn’t apply to them.
Stuart Harris, one of the group’s organisers, said: “Our volunteers have been striving to clear the town of litter for the wider community to enjoy since founder Alice Alves set up the group in March 2021 during the Covid Lockdown.
“We've had great support from the local community and a few local businesses.
“We now have more than 1800 members on Facebook who together have managed to collect mor than four metric tonnes of litter in the past six weeks.”

As well as organising groups to target the worst areas at weekends (please go to the events page on EKCLP), with individuals doing an amazing job of litter picking in their own neighbourhoods, the success of the group also lies in encouraging everyone to get into the habit of just picking up litter on their daily walks.
Colin Reid, the council’s Grounds and Waste Services Operations Manager, said: “A big thank you to all the volunteers who are not only supporting the annual Spring Clean campaign but also the council’s ongoing It’s Your Place campaign which encourages everyone to do their bit to keep their area free from litter, graffiti and other anti-social and illegal behaviours.”
The council has more information for local communities and volunteer groups as well as a community clean up form.
The council provides bags and litter sticks as well as arranging for the uplift of the bags once the local clean-up has been completed.
