Throughout Climate Week the council is promoting good work being carried out across our communities.

Climate Week is a chance to celebrate these efforts and invites everyone to get involved and help make positive impacts on our environment and Scotland's future.

Community groups are being encouraged to share their inspiring stories on social media using the hashtag #ScotClimateWeek – more information is also available on the Stories for Change page.

Councillor Norman Rae, the chair of the council’s Climate and Sustainability Committee, said: “Across South Lanarkshire there are so many groups playing a vital role to tackle the climate emergency we are all facing.

“Our final story this week is the wonderfully named Scoot to School project at Abington and Crawford Primary Schools.”

The schools applied for £2500 grants each from the council’s Climate Emergency Community Grants (funded by the Shared Prosperity Fund) to set up the Scoot to School projects to buy essential equipment and safety training to ensure pupils can safely scooter to their schools.

The funding allowed the schools to purchase high-quality, durable scooters suitable for children of various age groups, along with high-vis vests and safety-certified helmets.

The school’s Head Teacher of both schools, Kay Macpherson said: Crawford Primary School, said: “The funding has allowed us to not only ensure our pupils can get to school in safety but also contributes significantly to environmental sustainability, climate change mitigation, and enhancing the climate resilience of our community.

“By encouraging our pupils to use a scooter instead of being driven, the project reduces the number of short car journeys which decreases local air pollution, benefiting respiratory health and overall community well-being.”

The school also hopes by encouraging the pupils to take on a more sustainable mode of transport everyone else will to do the same, making everyone fitter and healthier.
