Childhood sweethearts still married after 60 years
Published: Monday 15 September 2025
EK has definitely proved far more than OK for one pair of childhood sweethearts.
Agnes and Raymond Reid moved to East Kilbride eight years after getting married – and are still there, 52 years later and celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary.
Originally from Bridgeton, they met while they were both at Bernard Street Secondary School, which had the distinction of being the last school built – in 1916 – by the Glasgow School Board.
They married in 1965 and had two daughters while living in Glasgow: Joyce in 1966 and Wendy in 1970. They moved to Greenhills in 1973 and their son, Derek, was born the following year.
The couple moved to Calderwood in 1977, where they have lived ever since and, although Joyce has lived in Australia since 1997, Wendy and Derek are still nearby in East Kilbride themselves.
Raymond, who was a truck driver, and Agnes, who worked for Marks & Spencer, have always loved music and theatre, holidays and spending time with their family and friends and, remaining very active, they still can be found in Glasgow every Saturday night for a meal with their close friends
On the day of their 60th wedding anniversary, however, they were surprised by a couple of unexpected special guests – South Lanarkshire’s Deputy Provost Bert Thomson, who presented Agnes and Raymond with flowers and a certificate on behalf of the council, and Deputy Lord Lieutenant for Lanarkshire Dr William Morrison Young, who handed over a certificate to mark their achievement and a congratulatory card from King Charles.
