Everyone asked to support the national Spring litter clean-up
Published: Friday 21 March 2025

The council is again supporting Spring Clean Scotland this year – the national anti-litter campaign that starts today.
Keep Scotland Beautiful’s annual campaign takes place from 21 March – 21 April this year, urging everyone to do their bit to keep their area free from litter.
Councillor Robert Brown, chair of the South Lanarkshire Council’s Community and Enterprise Resources Committee, said: “Dropped litter is a curse across South Lanarkshire, as well as much of the rest of the country, so we are determined to keep our environment clean and attractive for residents and visitors alike.
“So we are again supporting Spring Clean and continue to also support the council’s It’s Your Place campaign, encouraging everyone to take personal pride in their own communities.
"Across South Lanarkshire we already have a fantastic army of dedicated volunteers who regularly work with us to tackle the problems of littering.
“So, please join a litter pick if you can or help by disposing of your waste correctly in street or household bins, or at your local recycling centre - it really is that simple.”
Across Scotland more than 15,000 people have already registered to take part in the #SpringCleanScotland 2025 mass litter pick.
You can register your own clean up or find one to join on the Clean Up Scotland map.
Kevin Carr, the head of the council's Facilities, Waste and Grounds Service, said: “We can provide groups across South Lanarkshire with litter bags and litter sticks as well as arranging for the uplift of bags if required.
“This year, as well as the Spring Clean and It’s Your Place campaigns we are also hoping that everyone will act positively to help reduce the huge amounts of rubbish littering our streets and open spaces.
“We need everyone in our communities to help the council with this ever-increasing problem which continues to be caused by a significant minority of people who seem to think the rules don’t apply to them.
“There really is a simple way to stop all this - do not throw away rubbish inappropriately. Litter should always be put in litter bins, household bins or collected and taken to any of our recycling centres.”
