City Deal roads investment improves M74 access
Published: Thursday 4 July 2024
A £2.3m improvement project on the A72 Lanark Road at the Larkhall junction of the M74 is now complete.
And motorists can expect to experience significant benefits from the project which has been delivered over the last six months.
Principally, the project – funded by the Glasgow Region City Deal - will lead to improved journey times on all routes due to the installation of two new sets of traffic signals at the on and off-ramps of junction seven of the M74.
In addition, 2,300 square metres of new carriageway have been created or improved via widening and resurfacing works.
There is also:
- improved LED street lighting the installation of 40 new columns
- resurfacing and drainage work along 10,000 square metres of existing carriageway
- two new/improved vehicle restraint systems along the M74/A72 overbridge parapet length
- replacement of all road signs and safety barriers
The new traffic signals were switched on earlier this week and their impact will be monitored over the coming weeks to assess if adjustments are needed.
Executive Director of Community and Enterprise Resources, David Booth, said: “There has been an increase in the number of homes and associated infrastructure as we move forward with the Larkhall Community Growth area.
“These improvements to how drivers access both the motorway and the A72 have been designed to ease the traffic congestion that new development can generate. Not only that but the queues that often previously formed on the motorway should now be mitigated.
“This will provide a significant boost to road safety in the area.
“The project has also delivered tangible improvements to the area's road infrastructure, surfacing, drainage, and traffic flow. Together with the new signalling and LED lighting, we are delighted that, with our City Deal partners, we have been able to deliver real and lasting benefits for all who travel through this area of South Lanarkshire.”
South Lanarkshire Council is one of eight local authorities who, with the UK and Scottish Governments, are signatories to the £1.13 billion Glasgow City Region City Deal.
