Pupils helping with It’s Your Place campaign
Published: Tuesday 25 June 2024
Senior pupils from Uddingston Grammar School have been picking litter thoughtlessly discarded in their local area.
And the council’s grounds services were on hand with litter picking equipment to help the 30 pupils from S6 fill more than 20 bags of waste.
Grow Uddingston, which jointly organised the event with the school, joined the pupils alongside Brighter Bothwell and the Community Champion from Tesco Uddingston, to help with the clean-up of the local area.
The move aligns with the council’s It’s Your Place campaign which is urging everyone to dispose of their litter correctly and not dump waste anywhere in our communities.
Not only have the S6 pupils taken this message seriously but the school also has S2- S6 groups out doing litter picks regularly as part of their John Muir Award, Duke of Edinburgh and Learn to Lead Groups.
Alison McGuigan, the Depute Headteacher of Uddingston Grammar School, said: “It’s always great to have the opportunity to work with local community groups.
“Staff and pupils look forward to continuing to work together on future projects.”
The types of litter lifted include bottles and cans, fast food packaging including drinks cups and paper/plastic bags and cigarette related litter.
The message really is simple. Please dispose of your waste correctly - in our on-street litter bins, your household wheelie bins, your nearest waste and recycling centre or check out our bulk uplift service. More info is also on our Fly-tipping pages.
Kevin Carr, the head of the council’s Facilities, Waste and Grounds Services, said: “The pupils and staff who took part in this great event must be congratulated for not only clearing up their area but also backing the campaign to help keep our communities cleaner and more inviting for all of us to enjoy.
“So much time, money and resources are being wasted clearing up rubbish that could and should be disposed of using all the facilities that we provide.
“Our campaign urges everyone in our communities to help by not discarding rubbish in the first place.
“We cannot tackle this problem alone, so, let’s all do our bit to help South Lanarkshire be the place we are proud to call home – ‘It’s your place’.”
