The popular and historic local landmark was badly damaged in the blaze last Friday night. Police Scotland are investigating the cause of the fire.

David Booth, the council’s Executive Director of Community and Enterprise, said: “This is a massive blow for the town and we share local residents’ anger and sadness.

“It is especially hurtful given Rutherglen’s upcoming 900th anniversary, in which I am sure a big role would be planned for the bandstand.

“Having secured the area immediately after the fire, we are now assessing the situation as a priority. A structural survey is being commissioned to determine the structural integrity of the bandstand and a heritage architect will be commissioned to consider options.

“Those options will include for a refurbishment or rebuild programme and associated costs.”

The bandstand is  B-listed structure and Historic Environment Scotland will be advised of the incident and consulted on the way ahead.
