Community group gets cash for activities and training

A community group is celebrating after being awarded more than £8,000 to spend on activities and training.
Burnhill Action Group is a community led group working to support the Burnhill community through activities, events and initiatives. All activity of the Burnhill Action Group is for the benefit of the residents in Burnhill and addresses issues relating to local people.
The group is a key delivery partner for Our Place Our Plan Burnhill, working closely with the council’s Community Engagement team to respond to priorities highlighted in the plan.
They were awarded £8,278 following a Participatory Budgeting (PB) exercise, which gives local people a direct say in how public money is spent.
The money will give the group the opportunity to try out new activities that have been asked for by local people including drama, boxing and make up lessons.
Training and learning opportunities have been organised based on what local people have identified as important to them like mental health training, health issues in the community and outdoor safety.
All of the activities will provide local people with the opportunity to gain new skills, try new things and socialise with their neighbours for free.
Nicole Kane, a volunteer with the Group, said: “We enjoyed every minute of attending and delivering the activities that's been put on in Burnhill.
“It's given me the chance to learn new things and getting out and involved in the community has been so helpful when it comes to my mental health.
“I enjoyed it more because it's local and I don't have to worry about transport, it's all on my doorstep.”
Council Leader and Chair of the Community Planning Partnership, Councillor Joe Fagan, said: “It’s great to see Burnhill Action Group will use this money to benefit a wide range of people in the local area.
“It is a perfect example of local people having a direct say in activities taking place in their community.”
