Improvements on way at motorway junction
Published: Monday 18 December 2023

Work is expected to start in the New Year to improve capacity at an on and off slip of the M74.
Starting from 8 January 2024, improvements will be made to the A72 Lanark Road and at Junction 7 (Larkhall) of the M74.
The proposed works involve the provision of additional lanes through the area with a new linked traffic signal system which is to be installed at both the M74 on-slip and off-slip road.
Associated works include carriageway widening, drainage installation, the renewal of all safety barriers and road signs, the replacement of the street lighting network, carriageway resurfacing and road marking throughout. Funding for this project has been provided through the Glasgow City Region City Deal.
Given the nature of the works, which are expected to be over a period of six months, traffic management, in the form of temporary signals and lane closures, will be required for much of this time.
When in use, the temporary signals will be manually operated to ensure that expected delays are kept to a minimum.
Head of Roads, Transportation and Fleet Services, Colin Park, said: “The location and nature of the works are complex and to keep traffic flowing we will use temporary signals and lane closures.
“We apologise in advance for the inevitable delays this will cause, but it is essential work and when complete will greatly enhance the capacity of this critical area of our network.”
