Hamilton residents are being invited to join Hamilton Town House Library’s new social history Memories Group.

The Memories Group is open to all and provides an opportunity for people to share memories, conversation and company over a cup of tea.

The group will meet on the last Tuesday of every month from 1.30pm to 3.30pm. The sessions will focus on different aspects of working life and leisure, including home life and local shops.

For more information or to book your free place at the next session contact the library on 01698 452122 or email hamilton.reference@library.s-lanark.org.uk

The new group is part of the Scotland-wide Memories Scotland project which promotes social history reminiscence for enjoyment and wellbeing.

While the groups are dementia-friendly, they also welcome everyone of all ages.

Speaking ahead of the next meeting, Library Assistant (Information Services) Margaret Scott said: “Why not come along to our new Memories Group, bring a friend, make new friends, and take a trip down memory lane.

“Hamilton Town House Library has a wealth of local history materials including many photographs showing what Hamilton and the local area used to look like. All great to help get you reminiscing about what life was like growing up.

And Kay Morrison, General Manager of South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture, said: “I’m delighted that this new Memories Group is up-and-running and can’t wait to see how it develops.

“Our libraries are warm, welcoming spaces so we’re pleased to be able to offer this new activity for people to get involved with locally.”

The Memories Scotland project was formally launched in 2022 thanks to funding from the Scottish Government’s Public Library Improvement Fund, administered by the Scottish Library and Information Council (SLIC).

A total of 26 regional public library services are signed up to the project so far.

In South Lanarkshire there are currently groups in Fairhill Library, Forth Library, Avondale (Strathaven Library), Rutherglen Library, Biggar Library and Forth Library.
