A pan-Lanarkshire ceremony took place in Motherwell on Sunday, when Sheriff Principal of South Strathclyde and Dumfries and Galloway Aisha Anwar made the proclamation to the Lord Lieutenant of Lanarkshire, Susan Lady Haughey.

The local proclamation followed the Principal Proclamation at St James Palace in London on Saturday and was attended by a number of elected members from South Lanarkshire Council and North Lanarkshire Council.

On Monday afternoon Provost Margaret Cooper also represented South Lanarkshire at a service at St Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh to celebrate the life of Queen Elizabeth II.

Councillor Cooper said: “While it is my honour to represent our area at these events, it is of course a very, very sad honour. Her Majesty was a calming and dignified presence for so many decades. That responsibility now falls to the new king, and I wish him well as he takes forward his mother’s incredible legacy.”

Council Leader Joe Fagan said: “The death of Her Majesty and accession of the new King are incredibly significant moments in our nation’s history. The local proclamation was a chance for that significance to be properly recognised here in Lanarkshire.”
