More than £50m to be invested in council housing
Published: Friday 20 May 2022
Investment of more than £50 million is to be made improving existing and building new council homes.
Approved by full Council in February 2022, the money will be spent during this financial year (2022/23).
This huge investment through the Housing Capital Programme budget includes nearly £20 million on new council housing through the council’s affordable housing supply programme and the open market purchase scheme, £10 million on external fabric upgrading works, £4 million on environmental improvements, over £2 million on energy efficiency works and over £6 million on central heating improvements.
The investment in external fabric upgrading works and environmental improvements is more than double the amount invested in the last financial year.
Through the programme there will also be major investment in the two Gypsy/Traveller sites, and upgrades to sheltered housing developments.
While the Covid-19 pandemic has caused delays to the kitchen and bathroom, central heating and door and window programmes, we are pleased to report that these programmes will all recommence during 2022/23.
Executive Director of Housing and Technical Resources, Daniel Lowe, said: “The housing budget for 2022/23 not only guarantees ongoing investment in providing new, high-quality homes but importantly also ensures that we can continue to upgrade and maintain our existing homes to high standards.”
New homes already delivered include the development at Highstonehall in Hamilton, pictured above.
