South Lanarkshire Council has been granted funding through Sustrans Places for Everyone programme to further invest in the town centre active travel network.

As part of this a public consultation exercise is now underway for the next phase of work, which will see investment in walking and cycling routes on Churchill Avenue.

Churchill Avenue was identified as a priority for the town centre and wider area through previous consultation as part of the Active Travel Study for East Kilbride. The planned work would deliver a new segregated cycle route from the Queensway to Whitemoss Avenue.  

New and improved crossings and other pedestrian facilities are proposed at various points on the route.

It is important that the community participate in the development of active travel options and the council is now seeking to hear people’s views on the latest plans. 

Active travel means cycling, walking, using public transport and other alternatives to going by car.

Travelling actively offers many benefits including:

• Healthier citizens
• More connected communities
• Reduced traffic congestion
• Better air quality. 

South Lanarkshire Council wants to encourage more people to make walking and cycling the natural choice for their everyday journeys.

The East Kilbride Active Travel Study (ATS) undertaken in 2019 saw South Lanarkshire Council undertake an engagement exercise with the local community to find out which routes local people would like developed to see enhanced walking and cycling provision.

The investment in cycling and walking has already seen work completed (or nearing completion) on the following sections of the network:

• West Mains Road (Strathfillan Road to Creighton Grove)
•  
• Cornwall Street/Brouster Hill/Torrance Road

You can now access the Places for Everyone (PfE) survey and detailed drawings of the proposed work. The survey will close on Wednesday 30 March 2022.
