Local people have decided how to spend more than £1.5million on road and footway improvements across South Lanarkshire.

Funding was allocated after a Participatory Budgeting (PB) exercise, which allows people to have a direct say in how public money is spent.

In total 12 carriageway resurfacing schemes were delivered costing £520,000, with 21 footway improvement projects costing more than £1m.

Four of the carriageway resurfacing works were in Clydesdale, three in Hamilton, three in East Kilbride and one in Rutherglen/Cambuslang.

For the footway works, four were in Clydesdale, nine in Hamilton, seven in East Kilbride and one in Rutherglen/Cambuslang.

Chair of the council’s Community and Enterprise Resources Committee, Councillor John Anderson, said: “I would like to thank everyone who took part in the PB exercise to determine the type of roads and footways this money should be spent improving.

“We really appreciate their feedback and I am sure they will agree the works have made a difference to the roads and footways that were identified.

“We will be carrying out a similar PB exercise during the next financial year, and we will welcome feedback from residents when this exercise is launched.”

Among the footways improved during 2021/22 were the A706 Cleghorn Road, Lanark, Mill Road, Hamilton Blairbeth Road, Rutherglen and Maxwellton Road, East Kilbride.

Some of the roads improved included Abbeygreen Road, Lesmahagow, Lime Grove, Blantyre, Caledonia Avenue, Rutherglen and Tannahill Drive, East Kilbride.
