Venue returns to the centre of village life

With a major renovation completed a new generation are among the first to enjoy the benefits of a popular village hall.

Law Toddler Group are settling back in at the Tom Craig Centre as it returns to its place at the heart of community life.

South Lanarkshire Council and South Lanarkshire Leisure and CuIture worked in partnership to plan and deliver investment and improvement at Law’s Tom Craig Centre. Additional funding for the project came from community contributions linked to local development by housebuilders Persimmon.

With a main hall, lesser hall, multipurpose room and kitchen the hall plays a central role in community life for the village and surrounding area.

The reopening is a welcome boost to local recovery in the wake of Covid.

Among the first hall users to enjoy the reopened Tom Craig Centre were the members of Law Toddler Group.

The group’s President Amy Shaw said: “It is great being back in this space and having a hall that really suits our needs. It is a hub of village life, I remember attending loads of childhood birthday parties here and there are loads of pictures of me and my friends here when we were growing up.

“It is wonderful to see the toddlers making memories here too.”

Treasurer of the Toddler Group Marion Moffat said: “It is fantastic to have the centre back. Our group provides a great point of contact, particularly for younger parents. It provides a social space and while the wee ones are playing you can catch up, chat and share advice.”

Chair of Community and Enterprise Resources Councillor John Anderson said: “I am delighted to see the Tom Craig Centre returned to its rightful place at the heart of community life. It is also a very welcome step in the process of recovery as we look forward to the most severe daily impacts of the pandemic becoming a thing of the past.”

Chair of South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture Councillor Peter Craig said: “This hall plays host to a wide range of community activities and events, local clubs and indoor sports. Its return to full use is most welcome and I am sure the local community will keep it a busy and lively venue.”
