Councillor John Anderson, the chair of the council’s Community and Enterprise Resources Committee, said: “Lots of people mostly associate winter with the risks posed by snow, ice and low temperatures, but flooding because of severe rainfall can also pose us problems during this time.

“In the unlikely event of severe flooding, we will work with the police and fire and rescue to assess what needs to be done.

“If necessary, we will co-ordinate reception centres and arrange temporary accommodation for anyone evacuated from their homes.”

Flood alerts are provided by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) who also work with police and councils to identify flood risks.

Other agencies are also involved in flood risk management dealing with floods as they happen. The Scottish Government sets policies at national level.

A community-based organisation, the Scottish Flood Forum, supports and represents those at risk of flooding.
