Couples from across Lanarkshire enjoyed an afternoon of entertainment to mark their golden wedding anniversaries this week.

The Provosts of South and North Lanarkshire Councils jointly hosted a golden wedding reception at Motherwell Concert Hall, welcoming 46 couples to dance the afternoon away and remember their big day from 1971.

The annual celebration was held for the first time since the beginning of the health pandemic in 2020.

South Lanarkshire Provost Ian McAllan said: “I was delighted to join Provost Jean Jones in helping couples across Lanarkshire safely celebrate a half century of marriage.

“It is always a wonderful occasion and is truly heart-warming to see the love the couples still clearly have for one another.

“From a South Lanarkshire point of view, it was also lovely to catch up with a former Provost and Depute Provost, Russell Clearie and his wife Pam, who were among the happy couples celebrating their golden wedding.”

Provost of North Lanarkshire Jean Jones said: “The golden weddings celebrations have always been one of the highlights of the civic calendar and it was wonderful for both Provost McAllan and me to be able to host it once again this year.

“Things have changed so much since 1971, but the one thing which has remained is these couples lasting commitment to each other.

“I congratulate every couple on reaching this marvelous milestone in their married lives and I hope they all have many more happy years together.”

The happy couples enjoyed musical hits from their wedding year, dancing, an afternoon tea and were presented with a commemorative gift before having their photographs taken.
